  • This pair of Indian Flame Basslets, Pseudanthias ignitus, are courting in mid-water, as they often do at dusk.  The female, above, pales in comparison to the vividly colored male, which displays its most brilliant coloration during such mating rituals.  The pair mated moments after this photo was taken, releasing eggs and sperm into the water column, to be taken wherever the current carried them.
