  • A female Pharaoh Cuttlefish, Sepia pharaonis, reaches into a crevice to deposit eggs while 2 males compete for an opportunity to mate with her. During such courtship rivalries, males display spectacular, rapidly changing color patterns, probably meant to intimidate their rivals. In addition to threatening coloration, the dominant male in this photo has raised its center arms, exposing its parrot-like beak, also meant to discourage the rival male.
